Notes:
The WWW initially consisted of a collection of hyperlinked static documents whose content remained the same each time they were accessed. While static documents server a valuable purpose as information repositories, they offer little pedagogical advantage over hardcopies of the same information.
More recent web technologies allow the creation of interactive documents, whose contents change in response to user input. Such documents encourage student to learn and explore course content in an interactive fashion.
Two freely-available interactive WWW documents that I will describe are:
- Discus, a web-based discussion board that encourages group learning
- WebMO, a web-based interface to computational chemistry that encourages active learning
In each case, I will describe the package, give a live tour, summarize its features, describe how we use it in the curriculum at Hope College, and offer assessment results where available.
